April 11, 2026 Hunter Mill Corridor Historical Tour

   Join the Greater Oakton Community Association for this narrated bus tour, led by acclaimed local historian Jim Lewis.  The tour’s material will span from the formation of Fairfax County in 1742 thru the early 1900s, and focus on sites primarily on or just off Hunter Mill Rd.  You'll hear where the old mills/roads were located and about some of the famed military figures (particularly the Civil War era) and colorful residents who graced the area. Cost is $43 per seat.  In the event that you need to cancel, we will refund your money if we can find a replacement for your seat. This 3.5 hour tour will take place rain or shine.  Please arrive at 9 am at the Oakton Community Park, 2841 Hunter Mill Rd. – next to the old schoolhouse and roundabout - for Jim Lewis's comments and then board the bus for departure by 9:30am.  The tour will end at 1:00 pm. Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) Community Workshop for the Oakton Congestion Mitigation and Safety Study, Thursday, Nov. 13, 6:30 pm, Oakton High School, 2900 Sutton Road, Vienna. The workshop will include a brief presentation from FCDOT staff to introduce the project and a mapping exercise, which will divide attendees into small groups and allow the public to share their recommendations to improve transportation in Oakton. At the end of the workshop, each group will present their ideas and discuss priorities for short-term and long-term improvements.  For planning purposes, please RSVP to FC OT's Timothy Kutz or call 703-877-5600, TTY 711.  Supervisor Palchik proposed and arranged for funding of this study as a follow-on motion in response to the approval of the AT&T Oakton site specific plan amendment to the Comprehensive Plan. The study will include transportation analyses to test the effects on congestion d, and new roadway connections, lane configurations and other improvements. Study recommendations also will factor the impacts to bicycle, pedestrian and bus networks, while considering expected impacts to safety for all Saturday, c. 6, Historical Society of Fairfax County Talk on Dec. 6th, 2025, 2 pm. The Historical Society of Fairfax County is hosting historian Susan Hellman to discuss her documentation on The Negro Travelers’ Green Book. Between 1938 and 1967, Virginia featured prominently in this essential guide for Black people navigating the segregated South. Learn more about this vital piece of history at this website.
