On August 8th, some 250 local residents, community representatives, and volunteers attended the first ever “Oakton Day in the Park,” held in Oakton Community Park on Hunter Mill Road.

With the backdrop of music from talented local performer Chris Devine, attendees enjoyed a wide range of activities. Children painted rocks, listened to stories, walked along a “storybook walk,” played cornhole and bean bag toss, flew wood gliders, and competed with hula hoops. Adults enjoyed seeing the inside of the historic Oakton schoolhouse and watching the video detailing its history, as well as participating in guided trail walks in the woods. The Friends of Oakton Library were on hand to sell books to support the library, and outreach officers from the Fairfax District police station, which serves Oakton, spoke with guests and gave children a glimpse of their cruiser. State Delegate Mark Keam and a representative of Supervisor Dalia Palchik’s office were on hand as well.

The Greater Oakton Community Association, which organized the day, hopes that it will become an annual event for the community, as well as help continue its efforts to deliver on the promise of the park and schoolhouse—as well as extended sidewalks to reach them—to become the rich resources to the Community that they promise to be.
