The Greater Oakton Community Association has established an effort to help clear the informal trails in the woods in Oakton Community Park. Under the leadership of Oakton residents Willow Martin and Ann Balch, working in association with County-approved mentors for invasive plant removal Heidi Allen and Sara Holtz, teams of volunteers have already held four sessions—two in July, and one each in August and September—to remove such invasives as wavyleaf basketgrass and vines that have been strangling trees and blocking the trail. These efforts will help to restore native plants and wildlife in the Park. The next session will take place on October 23, National Make a Difference Day. Anyone interested in volunteering should contact Ann Balch (abalch@aol.com). No prior experience is required.
